Self tanning routine – my favorite self tanners

self tanning routine

I’ll admit, I may I over do it sometimes with the self tanner. I can’t for the life of me get a natural tan. If I’m lucky, I get the slightest of shade darker..A tanning bed is not even a question for me, I’d be a lobster.

Self tanners are a great alternative to get a deep tan in a non-harmful way. Even if I could tan naturally or in a tanning bed, I’d choose the self tanner! It’s just better for your skin and you can live worry free.

I’ve tried a lot of self tanners over the years and I’ve pretty much got it down pat! I use both drug store self tanners and high end ones. Some of the drug store self tanners work just as well, but they have unhealthy chemicals in them.

Below I’m sharing my self tanning routine and a how-to for newbies. I’m also sharing my favorite self tanners. Again, I’ve tried a lot, but there are so many other brands I want to still try.

I do typically two layers and if I have an event (like formal) I do three to four layers. When I do the four layers my brother tells me to lay off the tanner, so I guess two to three is good! If you’re going for a natural look then one layer of a dark shade is good! I use dark simply because I want to look dark.

Pro tip: With the dark, less is more! One layer of the dark self tanner is comparable to two to three layers of a light self tanner.

Bondi Sands is my favorite! The tan shows up pretty immediately and develops over six to eight hours.

B.Tan is a new one I’ve tried that I also really like. It shows up immediately as well and develops fully in six to eight hours. I find it to last longer on my skin than Bondi Sands products.

Jergens self tanning mousse and daily lotion are great, but with drugstore self tanners, exfoliate really good prior to application. I find Jergens to last the longest on my skin!

Skindrop natural self tanner is a go-to for a natural self tan. It’s perfect for day to day. It comes out like a lotion, and after six to eight hours, the color will show up on your skin, so apply before bed!

L,Oreal is another drug store self tanner. The more I use other ones, the more I don’t love this one. It’s very subtle. Pros are that it comes out clear and smells like coconuts but otherwise, I’m not a huge fan in comparison to the others!

FYI, I’ve tried a Tarte and Benefit self tanners and didn’t like either.

For face tanners, I did not like the face drops from Tanology. I love, love, love the dry oil from Bondi Sands. I use it on my face and apply it with a makeup sponge. After 8 hours, I have a really nice tan on my face. The Liquid Gold Dry Oil isn’t made for the face, but it’s all natural and oil based so I think it’s fine to use on the face, I’ve had no problems!

I want to try LovingTan and the Gradual Tanning Milk from Bondi Sands next so I will let you know how I like those. I hope this helps you all! It’s a great time to test out self tanners because we’re all home. I also feel so much better about myself when I’m tan. It’s a major confidence booster!
